Do you have research ready to present?
The call for the 2024 Net Zero Atlantic Student Research Poster Competition is open. Post-secondary and community college students can now submit an abstract for their research poster on renewable energy or clean tech innovation and have a chance to present it as part of the poster exhibition at the Smart Energy Conference in Halifax, NS. The conference will be held at the Westin Nova Scotian from April 15-16, 2024. Closes February 29, 2024.
THE OPPORTUNITY
At the Smart Energy Conference, professionals from academia, government, and industry are gathering to discuss matters important to energy sector research. For 2024’s conference, Net Zero Atlantic is hosting an exhibit of student research posters selected during this competition. The exhibit is open to all conference delegates to view and lasts the full two days of the Conference.
The competition has two steps: abstract submission review for selection of participants in the Net Zero Atlantic poster exhibit and poster judging for a $500 prize.
STEP ONE: ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
Submit an abstract of the research you will present on your poster by Friday, February 29, 2024. Your research should focus on one of two themes. Submit using our portal.
Themes for the research
- Renewable Energy - Topic examples are hydrogen, solar, tidal, wave, wind, genomics, hydro, environmental effects monitoring, solar, biomass, biofuels, and waste to energy.
- Clean Tech Innovation - Topic examples are nuclear, smart grid/mini grids/grid infrastructure design, smart homes/cities/communities, AI, big data, energy security, clean transportation, nanotechnology, energy efficiency, sustainability, recycling, energy storage, and CCUS (carbon, capture, utilization and storage).
Abstracts should be no longer than one page and should include a title, your name, academic affiliation, research advisor, contact information, a brief overview of your research and the category into which it best fits (please see categories themes above).

You will be notified by Friday, March 8, 2024, if your abstract has been approved.
STEP TWO: PRESENTATION JUDGING
Students with selected abstracts are to create research posters for presentation at the Smart Energy Conference. Your posters are reviewed by a panel of judges coordinated by Net Zero Atlantic, and you expected to give a 2-to-3-minute presentation on your research during judging and answer any questions.
Judges will review the student research posters using the following criteria:
- Relevance of the research to Atlantic Canada’s energy industry.
- Student’s participation in research.
- Student’s knowledge of the subject and ability to discuss the material.
- Poster presentation layout and readability.
A $500 prize will be awarded for the best student research poster from each theme area (2 awards in total).
ABOUT POSTER SET UP & MOUNTING
Poster panel boards and double-side Velcro tape are provided by Net Zero Atlantic. The posters are to be mounted horizontally and measure 48 x 48 inches. DO NOT use push pins or tape to secure your posters to the boards. You may include a brief bio on the poster as well as copies of poster abstracts and author contact information for viewers.
Before the conference, a member of the Net Zero Atlantic team will reach out to all poster presenters to confirm the day, time, and meeting place for sign in during the Smart Energy Conference. Please do not forget to bring your poster(s) with you to The Westin Nova Scotian.
